Francois Paiement (Obituary in Brunswick Record, vol. 37, no. 19, 30 March 1939)

Frank X. Paiement, for over fifty years a men's clothier in the Bodwell store, died Tuesday evening at his home on Maple Street after nine days' illness. He was 82 years of age.

He was born in Ruxton Falls, Quebec, in 1856, the son of Benjamin and Emelie Demers Paiement. When he was 12 years old he came to Brunswick, and worked first in the Cabot Mill. Before he was married 51 years ago, he went to work in the Bodwell store, and remained there for half a century.

He was a man with a competent sense of humor, and was perhaps the best known storeman on the street. Many tales exist of his pleasant tricks on customers and friends, and in the bygone days when practical joking was more appreciated he was usually at the bottom of some stunt that kept the town chuckling for days.

He retired a few years ago, and had made only infrequent appearances on Main St. since. Occasionally he had helped in the Bodwell store during sales and rush periods. He was a tall man, of fine appearance, and he carried himself well as age came on.

Mr. Paiement is survived by his wife and five children: Sadie Paiement, Eddie Paiement of the Cabot Mill staff, Mrs. George Bernier, Mrs. Henry Harvey of Montreal, and Dominique Paiement of Lisbon, a semi-professional baseball player of note. There are four grandchildren, children of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Paiement: Lena, George, Phil, and Nancy.

Funeral services are to be conducted Friday morning at St. John's Church at 8:00 o'clock, with burial in St. John's Cemetery.

Michael Gilleland (Letter from 2nd Grade Teacher)

Dear Mrs. Gilleland:

Michael finishes his work rapidly and well, however when he has finished he does not find something quietly to do. We have drawing paper, books, games etc. for their use. It is disturbing to the other children to have him walking around and talking. Perhaps you can suggest something which he is especially interested in that I could give him extra work in. I have had him write extra stories which he seems to like to do.

Recently I have had to speak to him about rough play and loud shouting both in classroom and outdoors. I'm sure he is being influenced by two or three of the other boys who are very rough and get him started.

Mrs. Libhart

One of my colleagues who read this letter said that I hadn't changed very much over the years. I have the roster of students in my 2nd grade class. There were 21 boys and 15 girls -- so much for small classes!
